Breaking News: Cabinet contracts to be made public

Contracts awarded by Cabinet will appear in the Official Gazette from April 1, Premier Dr. Ewart Brown announced this morning.

Details including the name of the contractor, the services to be provided, the amount of the contract and the Ministry providing the funding will also be listed.

Cabinet decided it would publish contract awards last month, but the Premier made the decision public this morning in a session of Parliament at the House of Assembly.

Dr. Brown said: “In addition to providing the people of Bermuda with greater openness and transparency in their Government, we are also protecting hard working contractors from people who sully reputable businesses in an effort to harm the Government politically. We have seen it too often; it is not fair to our country’s entrepreneurs.”

The notice in the Official Gazette will also include whether or not the contract awarded is after a tender procedure or on a sole source basis.

Dr. Brown added: “This Government has nothing to hide and is quite content to take this progressive step in the name of assuring public confidence in the processes.”

This week The Royal Gazette is celebrating Sunshine Week which calls for greater openness and transparency within Government.
