Breaking News: Club Med - a 'national disgrace'
A national disgrace and an accident waiting to happen - that is Shadow Health Minister Louise Jackson’s verdict on the asbestos-ridden Club Med site.
The MP visited the debris-strewn venue St. George’s today where she spoke out about the possible health hazard to trespassers.
She said: “Anyone can walk into this building - from children, to drug users, to vagrants. Doors are open, windows are smashed and there has been no serious commitment to preventing unauthorised entry.”
She said a tour of the site had revealed open doorways and windows and a few ‘no trespassing’ signs but no ‘danger zone’ signs and no barriers to stop people entering.
Government has remained silent about the site since admitting a stop order had been placed on demolition work on March 12 after asbestos was disturbed by hustle truck workers during clearing work to make way for a new hotel.
And, despite repeated questions from this newspaper, there has been no mention of whether the workers have been tested for ill-effects from inhaling asbestos, how the blunder had occurred and whether an inquiry will be held.
