Breaking News: Inflation hits 17-year high

Inflation hit a 17-year high in September as the price of goods rose by almost six percent, according to statistics released this morning.

According to Government’s Department of Statistics, the rate of inflation was 5.9 percent – the highest rate of inflation recorded since a 6.2 percent rise in February 1991.

The fuel and power sector was the largest contributor to the 12 month increase in the inflation rate with the annual rate of price increase for this sector reaching 40.4 percent.

The transport and vehicles and food sectors also impacted strongly on the annual rate of inflation, as price shifts in these sectors were 6.6 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively.
