Escaped paedophile David Burrows' 25 days of freedom ended yesterday afternoon when Police caught him following a dramatic high speed chase.

Around 35 officers scoured countryside near Orange Valley Road and Devonshire Marsh yesterday after Burrows ditched a motorbike which Police had chased him on from Paget lights.

But around 4.40 p.m. P.c. Robert Butterfield caught the sex predator in a swamp and struggled with him until other officers ran to his aid.

As he was led off to prison from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after receiving treatment for minor scratches, the foul-mouthed thug claimed he got plenty of sex while he was on the run.

Burrows, 21, is serving a six year sentence for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Last year he was jailed for two and a half years - to run consecutively with his other sentence - for having sex with another girl under 14, but he fathered twins by a 15-year-old girl while out on bail for that offence.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said an inquiry would be held to find out how Burrows survived since he escaped from prison officers while getting medical attention at The Arches in Paget on June 9, and whether anyone had harboured him.

Mr. Caines said Police got two tip-offs that Burrows was in the St. Mary's Road, Warwick, area around just after 3 p.m. yesterday and raced to the scene.

A man matching Burrows' description was seen on a bike riding east along Middle Road, Warwick, and officers followed.

At Paget lights, Burrows was ordered to stop but raced off along South Road, cutting into Brighton Hill Road and Orange Valley Road, ditching the bike at the junction between Orange Valley Road and Parson's Lane.

Around 35 officers, including some with dogs, scoured the wooded rural area around Devonshire Marsh, and at 4.40 p.m. P.c. Butterfield fought with Burrows in a marsh before three other officers ran to his assistance.

P.c. Butterfield said yesterday: "I was in the marsh by myself and he put up quite a struggle. He didn't want to be taken."

Mr. Caines said: "We are very excited and happy that he is off the streets and in Police custody.

"He was a man who wanted to remain free and he was seen running through the trees and bushes and Police did have to bring him down and he did put up a struggle.

"I would like to thank all the members of the community who helped with sightings and tip offs in helping us bring him back to custody." Burrows was taken to hospital for treatment for minor scratches on his face, shoulder and arms, and driven back to Westgate Correctional Facility at 6 p.m..

Mr. Caines said it was too early to say if Burrows was linked to a series of crimes reported in the west end of the island during the time he was on the run.

Bermuda Prison Service has launched an investigation into how Burrows managed to escape from officers while he was getting treatment for his eye on June 9.

As Burrows was led away in May to begin his six year sentence for having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 14, he turned to Assistant Justice Archibald Warner and said: "Have a nice day - you punk ass b***h".
