A bus driver suspected of drunk driving has been fired by the Public Transportation Board, but plans to launch an appeal through the Bermuda Industrial Union.

PTB Director Dan Simmons confirmed yesterday that the 37-year-old Devonshire man involved in a bus crash on Sunday, June 20 has officially been terminated.

?After a substantial internal investigation we thought it was in our best interests that we part company,? said Mr. Simmons.

Mr. Simmons would not comment on the former driver?s plan to launch an appeal through the Bermuda Industrial Union.

?He?s asked for a meeting and I don?t want to weaken my case,? said Mr. Simmons.

Police arrested the driver at 5.15 p.m. on the day of the accident on suspicion of impaired driving. The driver reportedly lost control of the bus and smashed into a wall on South Road, Southampton, near the Southampton Rangers sports club. The driver had been on duty at the time of the accident, but was off route. He was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
