A bus driver suspected of drunk driving has been suspended from work pending the outcome of two investigations into the incident.

Public Transportation Board (PTB) director Dan Simmons yesterday confirmed that the 37-year-old Devonshire man was placed on paid leave after the bus crash on Sunday, June 20.

The man will have to wait for the results of the Police investigation of the accident to discover if he will be allowed to continue as a bus driver.

PTB is also carrying out its own internal investigation, Mr. Simmons said, "but we have to wait until all the technicalities of the Police investigation are sorted out."

Police arrested the driver at 5.15 p.m. on the day of the accident, on suspicion of impaired driving.

The driver reportedly lost control of the bus and smashed into a wall on South Road, Southampton near the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.

Mr. Simmons confirmed yesterday that the driver had been on duty at the time of the accident, "but he was off route".

Asked when he expected the investigations would be done, Mr. Simmons said he wasn't sure, "but the sooner the better."

"The matter is still under review," said Mr. Simmons," and the driver has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigations."

The bus, which had received substantial damage in the accident, was still out of commission waiting for parts from Europe to arrive, he said.
