A backhoe fell off a trailer and smashed through a bus window - leaving a visitor in the hospital with shattered glass in her eyes and nine other passengers with light cuts and bruises.

The truck had been travelling towards Hamilton on Point Finger Road, Paget yesterday afternoon when the driver felt the connection between his truck and the trailer break.

He was trying to slow the trailer down as the accident happened. It smashed one of the rear windows on the bus - sending shattered glass everywhere - including into a tourist's eyes.

Fire Service spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said the call came in at 2.33 p.m. and two appliances responded to the call.

"The locals on the bus simply got off and left the scene, but the tourists stayed around," said Lt. Lovell.

"There was one woman who had to be treated for glass in her eyes."

The driver of the bus, Franklin Hollis, was still shaken when The Royal Gazette spoke to him after the accident.

The Hamilton Parish father of seven, saw the accident unfold before his eyes as he drove the number seven bus along Point Finger Road, in Paget.

"As I was driving up the road, I saw a bike overtake the truck, which was heading towards me," said 50-year-old Mr. Hollis. "It looked like he (the driver) was having trouble controlling the truck.

"It was like watching it happen in slow motion.

"I sped up as we got closer, because I didn't want it to crush us.

"I thought the Backhoe was larger, and I knew it would crush the bus if it hit us."

The driver of the truck was 33-year-old Michael DeSilva - who knew the connection between the trailer, which was carrying the Backhoe had broken off from the truck.

He said that as the bus approached he was trying to slow the trailer down, but it toppled over in the process.

Mr. DeSilva, who had been driving the truck alone, said: "The person who overtook me on the bike had nothing to do with the accident - the trailer had already broken off near the bus stop, but I was trying to control it.

"I am very shocked and I am just glad that no one was hurt - I am still shaken up at the moment."
