Island taxi drivers met yesterday evening to discuss their response to regulations they consider 'onerous and unreasonable'.

Just three months after the defeat in the Senate of a bill which would have required the industry to adopt computerised dispatching technology, cabbies are once again concerned about Government policy.

Government vowed to rigorously enforce existing laws in a bid to improve service. Cabbies are required by law to carry two way radios and subscribe to a dispatch company.

The Royal Gazette was unable to get information on the results of the meeting but ZBM TV news reported last night that the cabbies were concerned about the requirements to be on the road 16 hours a day and having to answer every job call that comes in. According to the report, the drivers often have difficulty finding replacement drivers to keep the cab on the road for a full 16 hours and that safety concerns meant that cabbies did not always want to answer every call.
