A "small" amount of cannabis for personal consumption cost a Canadian tourist $1,000 yesterday.

That was the fine Magistrate Carlisle Greaves levied on Dyke Julian Jean-Pierre, 28, for possessing the drug.

Police executed a search of the visitor's Hamilton Princess hotel room on Friday after receiving information relating to illegal drugs.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis after 3.04 grams of the plant material and papers (for smoking the drugs) were found in the room.

Jean-Pierre said that the amount found was "very small" and would have amounted to "three or four smokes".

But he apologised to the court and to Bermuda, promising not to violate the country's drug laws again.

He was ordered to pay the fine or spend 90 days in prison, but he was given a conditional discharge for possessing the paraphernalia.
