Two fundraising soccer matches held at Police headquarters last weekend have so far brought in more $1,200 for the families of officers killed or injured in the September 11 attacks on the US.

The Police Soccer Section dedicated the Force's men's and women's matches to the New York Police Benevolent Fund to help those people affected by the carnage at the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

A piper was present between the matches to play Amazing Grace, followed by a moment's silence for the players and spectators to pay their last respects to the 6,500 people feared killed in the terrorist attacks, and their loved ones.

Organiser Detective Constable Calvin Smith said he was pleased with the amount of money raised so far, but said it was still coming in.

He added: "We have raised about $1,200 through donations during the game, and then from people giving to the fund this week.

"It was a nice afternoon and a good way for people to pay tribute. We are still collecting money in, but are hoping to hand it over at the end of the week."

The opposing teams at Sunday's football matches were the Hemisphere Royals women's team, and the Hamilton Parish Working Men's Club.
