Child Abuse Prevention urges residents to ?Speak Up?

April is Child Abuse prevention month and the Department of Child and Family Services want to remind the public to inform them of any instances of abuse.

This year the child abuse prevention theme is "Speak up ? don't let the children suffer ? make a difference ? one child at a time".

Because of Bermuda's size it is fair to assume that when a child is abused someone in the community is aware of it, the Department said in a press release. The Department is urging the public to notify them when they believe abuse is taking place:

"These children face challenges that no child deserves to face and many will grow into adults who are self-destructive and damaging to our community.

Bermudians have a responsibility to protect children and help them thrive.

"Children also need to be empowered to speak up and not to be afraid. Abuse is the adult's fault not the child's."

The public can report any concerns to the Department on 278-9111. Any calls to the line are confidential and will be investigated.
