Civil servants have pledged to find environmentally friendly ways to commute one day a month.

It follows a day of action in support of sustainable development recently which saw Government office workers car pooling and using public transport to get to work.

Assistant Cabinet Secretary (Policy) Warren Jones said: ?The civil service day of action was a positive first step that at first blush has led to some short term life changing decisions that we hope will turn into long-term commitment.?

The initiative saw public transport usage surge by 20 percent but Rockaway commuters were left fuming when some were ticketed when they parked on a slip road because their car park was full. Mr. Jones said: ?We acknowledge there were some challenges to be overcome but they should not and will not stop us from repeating this positive initiative.

?We intend to analyse the information we have received in order to remove the impediments that may prevent take-up of this initiative. We also realise there will be challenges ahead but if we are committed to a more sustainable Bermuda, we must work together to make that happen.

He said the success of the day of action showed civil servants were committed in their efforts to contribute to a more sustainable Bermuda. ?As a result, the Civil Service Executive has committed to a monthly civil service day of action as it relates to transportation.
