College opens Academic Resource Centre

The response from Bermuda College students to their newly renovated and expanded Academic Resource Centre has been so great, that staff have had to add two evenings a week in additional to its already busy daily schedule.

The Academic Resource Centre (ARC) provides free learning assistance and a supportive environment to all registered students who wish to maximise their learning potential at the College.

The now roomy setting, complete with electronic teaching aids, can accommodate not only one-on-one sessions between tutors and students, but also smaller groups of up to eight.

Lecturers, including Dr. Clifford Maxwell, provide individual tutoring in mathematics, writing study strategies, computer studies, accounting, bookkeeping, accounting and assistance in forming small study groups.

With the expansion of the centre, additional staff were also hired.

Free learning assistance has always been available to all students at the Bermuda College, but in the past the centre consisted of one large area with cubicles.

?A great improvement,? Chairman of the Board of Governors, Senator Raymond Tannock said yesterday as he toured the facility.

In addition to tutoring, workshops on time management and study skills, minicourses and make-up tests will also be offered by the centre, as well as the coordination of the Computerised Placement Test (CPT) used by the Bermuda College.

The Centre?s director, Emancia Outberbridge was pleased with the response from students taking advantage of the resources and believes the centre will go a long way in providing the support necessary for under prepared students to achieve success.
