Businesses are being asked to register two employees - one from management and one employee representative - in an upcoming Train the Trainers Course on Health and Safety in the Workplace.

The course will run from May 13 to 16 and the participants will be trained to fill key roles in their company's Health and Safety Committee.

By law all companies and governmental departments which employ five or more people are required by law to have a Health and Safety Committee.

Government also announced on Thursday that 50 people, representing a wide range of workplaces, recently completed a Basic Training Course on Health and Safety Committees.

The programme took place the at Bermuda Industrial Union and participants were given an overview of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1982 and of proposed regulations which would see Bermuda adopt international workplace standards.

The standards include measurements for lighting, noise levels, ventilation, limits for exposure to hazardous substances, building and fire codes and guidelines for reporting and investigations of occupational illnesses and diseases.

According to the Government press release on the training, participants also learned how senior management can better communicate with staff the importance of safety policies and how to be proactive about incorporating self-monitoring programmes to conduct effective inspections and safety audits in order to identity hazards.
