Consultant ripped off BHC - claim

A consultant hired by Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) to source empty property sold a home to the corporation for a $65,000 profit after buying it two months earlier, it was revealed yesterday.

Housing Minister Sen David Burch cited the deal as one example where companies and individuals have ripped off BHC.

And he revealed BHC's lawyers are now pursuing the consultant, whom he did not name, to get back the $65,000, plus interest.

"In our vacant and derelict programme we hired consultants to source property," he said yesterday. "It was recently that we learned that one property had been bought by the consultant two months prior to selling it to the Corporation for a tidy profit of $65,000.

"I think that is wrong and we have gone to our lawyers and said give us the $65,000 plus interest."

The Minister threatened to use Parliamentary privilege in the Senate to name those he said had acted dishonestly in their dealings with BHC.
