Police are on the lookout for a conwoman who collected cash for fake charities.

The woman approached the contractor working on a house on Hermitage Road, near Elliott Primary School, claiming she was selling geraniums for $10, with all proceeds going to the school.

As a result, the unsuspecting man gave her a $20 bill and was expecting $10 change. But the culprit asked the workman if she could put the remaining $10 towards the Elliott Primary Travel Fund, which he did.

When the owners of the house heard what had happened, they contacted the school and were told no such fundraising was taking place.

Assistant principal at the school Valerie Williams warned everyone to be on their guard and said if people were approached and asked to give money to Elliott Primary, they should make sure the fundraising is official first.

She said: "A grandparent at the school called to say a workman at his house had donated $20 to the school. We told the man that we had not had a travel fund for about four years, and that this was not official fundraising for the school.

"We knew nothing about it. If we are fundraising, it would be much more official. We always send letters to parents when we are looking to raise money, we don't just ask anyone.

"People should not give unless they know it's official."
