Police are looking out for 400 stolen ears of corn after a field on Middle Road, Devonshire was raided on Thursday night.

"The audacity of this is that he came in on a motorcycle, harvested the crop and then took it out bag by bag on his cycle," said Carlos Amaral, who farms the field near Cable and Wireless headquarters.

"Corn is an easy crop to grow, and it's hard to control this type of theft because home gardens grow it as well, so unless someone sees someone travelling along the road with the crop it's hard to catch.

"They will watch what we do in the field, come along, and harvest right before the grower gets in."

Mr. Amaral added: "The guys doing this don't see it as a major issue. They think, `I'll steal corn or pumpkins', but what they don't realise is that it could be $200 worth of produce, and there's no difference between the field and my wallet.

"He's still stealing and it's affecting someone's livelihood. It's difficult to police the situation. Stores stick to their regular growers, but Joe Blow off the street who has his corn ... it's his word against theirs. They would buy out of good faith."

Police are calling on anyone who see a person selling corn who does not appear to be a reputable farmer to report it to Police at 295-0011.
