Free health screening and fun activities will be offered in Court Street on Saturday.

Some 300 health care professionals and volunteers will be on hand from noon to 6 p.m. to offer blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma, diabetes and HIV screening as well as advice on breast cancer, nutrition, asthma, drugs, alcohol and mental health.

The event is sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity of Howard University in memory of fraternity brother Dr. Charles Drew who pioneered work in blood plasma preservation and storage.

Health fair chairman Dr. Stephen Broomes said: “For several years I felt that such a fair would be of great benefit to the Island.

“In addition to increasing health awareness we wish to motivate participants to make positive health behaviour changes.”

He said the fraternity had picked Court Street because it was “overwhelmingly burdened with drugs and prostitution”.

And he said residents either had limited access to adequate health care or chose to not to seek medical attention.

There will be live music, Gombey dancers, a fun castle, Dotty the Clown, DJ Double SS, a gospel choir, a dunk the doctor tank, majorettes and food from the Jamaica Grill.

A motorcycle is the first prize in a free draw. Other prizes include grocery vouchers, pharmacy vouchers and T-shirts.
