Harbour Radio Sunday night reported a 45-year-old crewman aboard a US Navy submarine - who suffered a suspected cardiac arrest while sailing off of Bermuda - died before he could be evacuated to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The submarine, which was not named for security reasons, contacted Harbour Radio at 7 p.m. Sunday while it was about ten miles east of the Island.

A medical team from the hospital, along with EMT's from the Clearwater Fire Station, were scrambled and ferried to the submarine by pilot boat around 7.30 p.m., meeting up with the submarine about three miles east of the St. David's lighthouse.

The submarine was also due to land a suspected appendicitis case Monday morning. The medical team also attended to that case as well as to a third personnel transfer for ‘humanitarian reasons'.

As of Sunday night, there was no decision on how and when the deceased would be repatriated to the US.
