Crime-fighting organisation launches publicity drive

Crime Stoppers has produced a series of public service advertisements in response to residential thefts and the continuing escalation of cycle thefts.

Crime Stoppers chairman David Carruthers said that they are taking a pro-active approach to increased crime in our community by producing a series of ads that specifically highlight certain areas and crimes.

"In this first series of 30-second spots, which began airing on Monday night, we are highlighting the residential areas of Happy Valley, Spanish Point and Spice Hill, which we understand from the Police Service are currently being targeted by thieves," said Mr. Carruthers.

"In the ads we encourage the residents of these neighbourhoods to take special care in securing their property and to be on the look out for any suspicious activity.

"The ads encourage and remind residents that they can call the Crime Stoppers 24 hour confidential hotline at any time and that rewards are offered."

Mr. Carruthers added that they have also produced a forth commercial, which specifically addresses the problem of cycle theft.

He said: "The message here is that it is happening right under our noses, often in broad daylight and that it is time the general public began reporting what they know before they become the next victim."

All the ads reinforce that it is a safe and confidential way to report suspicious or known criminal activity.

The number to call is 1-800-623-TIPS.
