Several men jumped a security guard as he was trying to remove a patron from the Club 40 night club on Front Street on Sunday morning. The security guard lost a tooth when he was hit in the face with a bottle. He reported the attack around 2 a.m. at the Hamilton Police Station and was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of his wounds. One man was arrested in connection with the incident. Further inquiries are underway.

Police are investigating a break-in which occurred at the Fat Man's Cafe in Devonshire last week when a large number of drinks were stolen. The owner of the restaurant said someone broke into the cafe between May 29 and May 30. Police said further inquiries into the incident are underway.

Approximately $1,000 in cash was stolen from the Ex-Artillerymen's Association sometime early on Sunday morning. Later that day the club secretary found that someone had gained access to the gaming machines and made off with its contents.

Trio nailed by alert security staff

Would-be shoplifters almost made off with seven boxes of press-on nails and a black eyeliner at the Phoenix Store in Hamilton last week. The three culprits successfully left the store without paying for the goods and were stopped by Phoenix security staff at Shannon's Clothing Store in the Washington Mall.

A homeless man was fined $500 last week for attempting to steal 14 pastries.

Orlando Gibbons was thwarted by Marketplace employees from taking the pastries, valued at $9.35, from the Church Street store on May 21, said Crown counsel Wayne Caines.

Gibbons pleaded guilty to the charges, saying that he had been “homeless and hungry”. He added that he lost his job three weeks prior to the incident.

“I'm now gainfully employed and have a place to stay,” said Gibbons.

But Senior Acting Magistrate Carlisle Greaves did not accept Gibbons' excuse that he had been unable to find work saying he had similar convictions in the past.

“I'm not buying that. A man has to be either sick or worthless not to find work in Bermuda'' said Mr. Greaves, who referred to the local construction boom and Bermuda's low unemployment rate.

After asking the Magistrate for time to pay his fine, Mr. Greaves told Gibbons: “I gave you time. The time is now.”
