A man was acquitted yesterday in Magistrates' Court after he was accused of importing $60,000 worth of cannabis.

Brentley Flynn, 26, of St. Anne's, Jamaica had been working as a cleaner on the cruise ship Horizon on May 6 when the drugs were found in his cabin.

Mr. Flynn maintained his innocence throughout the trial, which took place last month. Magistrate William Francis said: "I find firstly that there is no evidence at all that the accused put the drugs in the compartment. It was on the basis that he saw the packages in New York, did he even know what was in them. The burden of proof is on the prosecution. There was also no fingerprint evidence. I find him not guilty for importing and or handling. He is acquitted and the case is dismissed." Defence Lawyer Larry Mussenden said: "My client and I are happy with the outcome. There was no evidence that he touched the packages in New York. There was no evidence that the cruise ship came to Bermuda and no evidence that it was imported." Mr. Flynn, along with three other roommates, had been arrested on suspicion of importation. The others were released immediately but officers Mr. Flynn was charged. During the trial he said that he had seen the packages behind the panel in the toilet when he was in New York, however, he had not touched the packages. No fingerprints were found on the package.

Mr. Flynn was released yesterday afternoon and was due to leave the Island soon after.
