Seven Customs officers at Bermuda International Airport pulled an impromptu "sick out" yesterday afternoon as the result of a labour dispute.

Collector of Customs Winifred Fostine-DeSilva confirmed that seven officers had gone home sick at 2.30 p.m., in what is believed to have been over overtime pay.

But Mrs. Fostine-DeSilva said the walk-out had not disrupted incoming or outgoing flights and all passengers had been dealt with as usual.

She said Customs officers from other divisions had been transferred to the airport to cover.

"Other than that, I don't know anymore," she said.

The Royal Gazette understands that the officers involved - who are senior officers in the Customs department - attended a meeting with the Bermuda Public Services Union (BPSU) on Tuesday night to discuss their grievances.

Attempts to contact BPSU General Secretary Ed Ball Junior for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.
