Permission to build a stable in Somerset has been denied by the Development Applications Board for environmental reasons.

The proposed site for the stables was at 3 Kiskadee Lane, Sandys and included plans to house four horses, a fenced-in lot, a covering over portable stables and a tack and feed room.

The DAB said the application, submitted by Mr. Raymond Bean failed to turn in suitable information to allow for proper assessment of the site.

In their statement of refusal, the DAB said the use of the land to keep horses and the associated retroactive development does not protect the environment, visual and the amenity value of underdeveloped land. A stables could also possibly destroy areas of ecological importance and wildlife habits or maintain the visual and natural breaks between areas of development.

"In this regard retroactive development does not protect the green backdrops and the natural topography and thereby maintain the illusion of open space," said the statement.

The Department of Planning received the application on June 15 with additional information on July 6.

Efforts to contact Mr. Bean were unsuccessful.
