Bermuda is to observe the international commemoration day for dead and injured workers next Monday.

Health and Safety Officer Doris Foley said it was the first time Bermuda has participated in the day, organised by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU).

Mrs. Foley said the Bermuda Industrial Union is organising a march to honour those who have met tragedy in the workplace.

She said: "We also want to take this opportunity to urge members of the public to contact us if they know of individuals who have been permanently injured or who have died as a result of workplace accidents so they can be remembered."

To show their support, members of the public are being urged to turn on their car lights and to observe a moment's silence while churches are asked to have a moment of prayer.

Activities next Monday include employers and workers converging on the City Hall steps at 11.45 a.m., a declaration by Health Minister Nelson Bascome at noon, a walk from City Hall to the Cathedral at 12.15 p.m. and a candle light service at 12.30 p.m.

Each month Government holds a four day course on health and safety in the workplace.
