A 20-year-old disqualified driver was imprisoned for three months on Thursday after he admitted driving while impaired.

Tyrone L. Sampson, of Random Lane, Warwick pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to both driving while disqualified and refusing to comply with a breath test.

But he pleaded not guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol.

Crown counsel Shakira Dill told Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves that Sampson was already disqualified from driving for a previous drunk driving conviction less than a year ago, on May 29, 2003.

Ms Dill said that on March 12, 2004, Police saw Sampson driving a car erratically near Crow Lane.

He continued driving into Paget at high speed, ignoring warnings from Police to stop but lost control of the vehicle at the Stowe Hill junction.

When Sampson stepped out of the car, he tried to run away but Police caught him after a short chase.

Sampson was unable produce a driver's licence.

He told Police his name and denied that he had been drinking. Police arrested him and took him to the station where he refused to take a breathalyser test.

Sentencing Sampson, Mr. Greaves said: "You have no regard for the authority of the court, or law or for life and limb or the safety of the travelling public. No fines, jail."
