Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Kulandra Ratneser said he will appeal the sentence handed down to son of Government MP Nelson Bascome on Tuesday, calling it “unsatisfactorily inadequate”.

Nelson Bascome, Jr. pleaded guilty to importing more than $11,000 worth of marijuana into Bermuda in December of last year to feed what has been termed as his “marijuana addiction”. The 24-year old was sentenced to three years' probation after pre-sentencing reports called him an addict who showed no remorse for using the drug. The report also said Bascome claimed he only attended a drug treatment facility as he thought the sentencing judge would be more lenient with him. Crown counsel Cindy Clarke had argued for a prison sentence of five years for the importation. “I have decided that the sentenced passed by Mr. Justice (Archibald) Warner was in my view unsatisfactorily inadequate in all circumstances,” said Mr. Ratneser yesterday.
