Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown won't be bidding to oust Premier Jennifer Smith, despite being tipped by rebels as a possible candidate.

Two years ago Dr. Brown launched a surprise bid for the deputy leadership of the party but was heavily defeated by incumbent Eugene Cox.

Shortly after the result he told The Royal Gazette: "This was a learning experience. I thought I would qualify for leadership before my political career is over."

Last week rebel spokesman Wayne Perinchief called for the Premier to step down and named Dr. Brown as a possible successor after praising the way he had handled the transport brief.

But last night Dr. Brown said he would not be standing for the leadership this time around.

He said: "At this point I am concentrating on my ministerial initiatives."
