Cup Match celebrations should not begin for one Devonshire man until his fines are paid, Magistrate Will Francis warned.

After he fined Gilroy Perott, $1,400, Mr. Francis told him: "Be sure to pay this before you go to Cup Match."

Perott pleaded guilty to four charges of driving an unlicensed car, driving an uninsured car, driving without a valid driver's license, and obstructing justice yesterday.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that on May 4 Perott was stopped by police while riding on Parson's Road because he had a broken rear brake light. Perott told the police officers that the car did not belong to him when they asked why it displayed a December 2000 sticker.

Perott, 34, of Green Acres Road, who was aware of outstanding warrants out for him, tried to run from the officers, but ran into a nearby wall, falling to the ground.

Police discovered there were a slew of warrants for Perott and arrested and charged him.

Perott was fined $600 for having no insurance and Mr. Francis noted: "Suppose when you panicked you ran into my car. I wouldn't have been able to look to Colonial or any of those deep-pocketed people for help." Mr. Francis also fined Perott $450 for driving an unlicensed car, $150 for having no valid driver's license, and $200 for obstructing police officers.
