A Jamaican woman facing a drug importation charge had an application to change her plea to not guilty refused in Supreme Court last week.

Glennamur Pauline Russell, 45, of Union Street, Pembroke, originally pleaded not guilty when she was first charged with conspiracy to import cocaine in July last year.

Russell then changed her plea to guilty during an arraignment session this year, telling Chief Justice Richard Ground she didn't want to waste the court's time.

But in court, her lawyer, Victoria Pearman, made an application to have Russell's plea changed back to not guilty.

Ms Pearman said that in a social inquiry report Russell maintained her innocence.

"She's effectively saying that 'I'm going to plead guilty just to get this behind me'," Ms Pearman said.

Crown counsel Juan Wolffe said Russell had benefited from counsel from defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher since August of last year.

"We have to assume that she received eminent advice from highly experienced counsel," he said.

"There is no evidence at any time that shows she did not understand her plea," he added.

Assistant Justice Archibald Warner agreed that Russell had the benefit of a lawyer throughout her appearances in court. He refused the application and Russell will appear on July 1 for mention to set a date for sentencing.
