A drug smuggler already serving time in Westgate on possession charges pleaded guilty to importing cocaine and marijuana in Supreme Court yesterday.

Jaha Akilly Mallory, 48, pleaded guilty to two importation charges for the drugs valued at roughly $163,000 and received a five year sentence.

Mallory's sentence for importation is to run concurrently with a six and a half year sentence he received last summer for possession of the same marijuana and cocaine. Mallory was intercepted at the Bermuda airport in January 2000 after officers received a tip from authorities in England.

Both drugs were found in his suitcase but, during his first trail, Mallory claimed responsibility for the marijuana but that he had no knowledge of the cocaine.

Mallory said that he was a Rastafarian and the marijuana was intended for religious use as a sacrament.

His conviction on the importation of the two drugs was later quashed by the Court of Appeal in November which stated he should have been allowed to present his defence to a jury.

A retrial was ordered on the two importation charges.
