A drugs trial in Supreme Court was delayed yet again yesterday when a lawyer was no longer able to represent one of the accused.

Dennis Patrick Simmons, 30, of Brightside Crescent, Smith's, Kingsley Owen Young, 34, and Rodney Craig Simmons, 31, both of Ord Road, Paget, are accused of conspiracy to import more than $1 million worth of cannabis on January 6 last year.

The beginning of the trial has been delayed several times. The trial was not able to go forward because Young's lawyer, Michael Scott, was unable to continue to represent him. Mr. Scott won the Sandys North seat in the recent by-election and his capacity as a defence lawyer would be a conflict of interest.

Young has now arranged for overseas council to represent him.

Frustrated Assistant Justice Archibald Warner said: “They (the defendants) are here this morning and the case that was put down in its place has collapsed and now this looks like it is on its way to collapse.”

He added: “This has been a year now. They've been waiting for over a year now. It will be two years before they get a trial.”

Mr. Warner adjourned the matter until the May 3 arraignments session and extended bail to the three men.
