The mood among staff at the Elbow Beach Hotel was unhurried as they prepared to use "100 percent" of their resources to accommodate their share of an influx of extra guests late Tuesday afternoon.

But like other local hotels, they were on heightened alert to receive scores of extra guests descending on the Island as a result of diverted flights due to the multiple disasters in the United States.

"This is a bit like a hurricane exercise," said spokesperson Kendaree Burgess-Fairn. "We go through this a lot."

The hotel was ready for 100 percent occupancy - or more if necessary - Tuesday afternoon.

"We have ready every extra cot and box springs and mattresses are being prepared by the engineering department," Ms Burgess-Fairn told The Royal Gazette.

The Island-wide effort to accommodate the close to 2,000 extra guests expected on the Island was co-ordinated by the Bermuda Hotel Association and the Elbow Beach appeared to have things well in hand.

An extra Internet station set up in the lobby area was just one of the contingency measures put in place. Guests got more than the usual welcome letter with each of the hotel's 244 rooms supplied with a list of on-Island trauma counselling services.

A German film crew on a six week stay here and an airline crew had already given up a room each.

In the end, the hotel was at 70 percent occupancy - most of the extra guests were crew members of a Delta flight from Rome en route to Atlanta.
