Parliament will soon put legislative finishing touches to electoral reform with the passage of amendments made necessary by the move to a single seat system.

Many of the changes are housekeeping matters made necessary by last year's Order in Council which transformed the electoral landscape for 20 dual seat constituencies to 36 single seat districts.

The bill proposes to change the Parliamentary Election Act by dumping now outdated provisions such as references to dual seat constituencies.

Candidates who receive the only nomination for an electoral district will be declared elected by the Returning Officer.

It relaxes some requirements for identification documents for voting purposes by allowing voters to produce expired documents, with a verifiable date of birth, photograph and signature.

The Government also tabled amendment to the regulations governing elections to allow identification cards issued by businesses to be used as means of voter identification. It also requires Returning Officers to report electoral ties to the Deputy Governor.
