Saturday End-to-End Walk/Ride/Paddle was an unprecedented success, organisers say.

At last count a record 1,333 people participated, said End to End organising committee chairwoman Anne Mello .

And so far $152, 444 have been paid in from hundreds of financial pledges made leading up to the event.

The donations are expected to top $200,000 when they have all been collected.

"From start to finish it's most definitely one of our most successful ones," Mrs. Mello said.

"I must express our thanks to the hundreds and hundreds of volunteers who helped to put this on. And of course to the committee members."

Sponsors Mobility and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation will be collecting remaining pledges at their offices.

"We're very grateful to them because we give all of the pledge money to the charities and in order to cover the costs we rely on our sponsors."

Walkers and cyclists were on the road from 8 a.m. until about 4 p.m - Mrs. Mello said the motoring public were extremely cooperative.

About 36 kayakers paddled from Shelly Bay to Dockyard and for the first time the event saw a group of elite swimmers make a two hour trip from Spanish Point to Dockyard to test the feasibility of including the swim route in future End to Ends.

This year's proceeds will be divided between The Family Learning Centre, The St. George's Foundation, The Reading Clinic, St. John's Ambulance and The Physical Abuse Centre.
