Enduring mystery to be featured on TV

A London-based TV company is planning to shoot a documentary on the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle this summer.

The programme will be part of a science series distributed worldwide, rumoured to be for the National Geographic channel, and will study the many explanations linked to the mystery of the Triangle.

Pioneer Productions, an award winning company which has had science documentaries aired on British and American TV, will be filming in Bermuda in the coming months and are interested in hearing from Bermuda residents who believe they have experienced or studied the Bermuda Triangle.

The continuing interest in the Bermuda Triangle has sparked Tourism Minister Renee Webb and tourism activist Tony Brannon to question why it has not been exploited more.

The name was used by Bermuda Triangle Brewing which started in Southampton in the 1990s as the Island?s first microbrewery.

But it was bought out in 2000 and changed its name.

Many Bermudians have observed how visitors are fascinated with the concept of the Bermuda Triangle and have asked if there are tourist attractions about it. Ms Webb said Bermuda had been tempted to cash in on the phenomenon?s worldwide cache when choosing a marketing logo with an invitation to ?Get lost in the Bermuda Triangle?.

However despite its global recognition, Government decided the Triangle had a negative connotation while the Bermuda shorts which were eventually chosen, had a similar recognition value but no such drawbacks.

Ms Webb said: ?I do agree it should have been exploited. I still think it has possibilities to be used in a positive way ? a museum, a boat, there are many ways.

?I know there?s a restaurant in Paris called The Bermuda Triangle so if they are able to use it ...?

Tourism activist Tony Brannon said his website Bermuda.com is linked to one of the Bermuda Triangle websites because it picks up so many hits.

He said a bar, boat or museum could all exploit the theme.

?I have got to tell you I think the idea of a Bermuda Triangle theme, whether it be little museum, or a bar or something like that would be a surefire winner.? He said Bermuda?s approach to tourism was ?a bit staid?.

?Something like that would be really, really good.

?It?s more than obvious, a bar on Front Street couldn?t go wrong.

Another theme which could be exploited was Bermuda?s pirate past, said Mr. Brannon.
