Bermuda could feel the effects of a category one hurricane by early on Monday morning, according to meteorologists.

Tropical Depression Erin is expected to intensify over the weekend and take a northwesterly track towards the Island.

A Bermuda Weather Service spokesman said he expected the system to come as close as 110 nautical miles to the east-southeast of the Island.

He said Erin is forecast to be packing winds of 65 knots by Monday at 3 a.m., with gusts to 80 knots.

And he said seas were forecast to rise between 14 and 20 feet if the system comes as close as expected, with the storm surge most likely concentrated towards Bermuda's eastern end.
