Construction crews are tackling an erosion problem near St. Catherine's Beach in St. George's.

The area was damaged when Hurricane Gert swept past the Island in September, 1999.

A section of the shoreline along Barry Road was washed out to within a foot of a roadside wooden fence.

The resulting gash in the cliff face is more noticeable from the water than the roadside but there were fears that the road might become dangerous.

But the Ministry of Works and Engineering is now taking remedial action to strengthen the cliff face.

The work began shortly after Cup Match and is expected to be completed by October. The Ministry is installing a "rock armour sea defence" to halt the erosion process.

The void behind the rocks will be filled and compacted to a 2:1 slope.

After the remedial work is completed, the Ministry intends to landscape the area.

"The top surface will be finished with top soil and on completion of the restoration work, the whole area will be landscaped with trees, shrubs, plants and grass," according to a statement released by the Ministry yesterday.
