Experts flown in to improve lighting at airport

Stuart Burow and Brad Fletcher were flown in from Canada to fix the approach lights at the Bermuda International Airport.

Two airport lighting and navigational aids technicians from Canada are on the Island to carry out much needed repairs after Hurricane Fabian.

BAS-Serco was contacted by the president of Signal Electric in Sydney, British Columbia after the storm to see if the Island's airfield was in any need for reconstruction.

Brad Fletcher and Stuart Burow, who specialise in Airport lighting, flew into the Island on September 8 on a private plane operated by Island Aviation before any commercial flights began flying to the Island, said Richard Savard, vice president and chief operating officer of BAS-Serco. "We're working on rehabilitating the approach system on the eastern side of the runway where the storm wiped it out and it was pretty much nonexistent," Mr. Fletcher said.

"But all the approach lights are up and running we just have to fix the signal flashing system which will take a bit longer because we have to get the parts flown in," he added.

"They have been very instrumental in repairing the airfield lighting system," Mr. Savard said.

Mr. Fletcher was amazed at the destruction the hurricane had caused and said that even dead fish and coral had been washed up on the airfield.

"Everything is pretty operational but now we're just making sure that everything is safe," Mr. Fletcher said.

The airfield also needed to have its navigational aids fixed and James Laverriere and David Levitt, who were also contracted by BAS-Serco, were sent from Canada as well.

Mr. Laverriere said there had been a big variety of clean-up that needed to be done and said: "It's a big job and a lot of hours but everyone has been very helpful."

Mr. Laverriere said the primary channels were up and running but that the secondary channels, which the pilots fall back on if anything happens to the primary channels, is still in the process of being fixed on the radar side of the restoration.
