A man received burns to his leg after the tile solvent he was working with exploded at a Boss's Cove Road residence yesterday morning.

The walls and ceiling in the lower apartment were black and one wall was blistered from the heat of the explosion, which is still under investigation.

Bermuda Fire service spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said seven firefighters responded to the 8.50 a.m. call to the Pembroke residence. He explained that the solvent to prepare the tile had by some factor caused an explosion that burned the worker's leg and damaged part of the bottom floor of the house.

He said tiling work was being done on the lower apartment and he estimated the damage to be around $2,000.

One of the residents', who was home at the time, was in the next room when he heard a sound that he assumed was just the men knocking something down.

Instead, part of the ceiling had fallen in and heat and smoke had damaged the brand new tile and the walls of the adjacent room.

He said the workers described a fireball that had come down the hallway, which melted a fan and caused some of the hallway's roof to fall in.

The tiler was admitted into the emergency room but was discharged a short time later.
