A fun-filled family day at the Loyal Hill playground has sparked a desire to build a mini skateboard and rollerblade park in the area.

On October 4, the Loyal Hill Racing Club, the youth division of the Loyal Hill Community Association, sponsored a fun day at the playground - which has a basketball court as well as an RC car track and a BMX dirt track.

"We had Warren Marchese and Gary Pollak, two professional BMX stunt riders, to teach the kids flat land and dirt jumping tricks and the Bermuda Electric Remote Control Club showed off their remote control cars," said fun day organiser Keith Simmons."

Mr. Simmons is now trying to find support for adding extreme sports equipment to the park.

After almost 350 people showed up for the first fun day he is confident that the community will be warm toward his initiative.

He wants to have a small skateboard and rollerblade ramp ready for the next family fun day planned for November 11, during the half-term holiday.

Tom Hogan, who is ranked number four in the world for BMX tricks, has already confirmed he will attend the event which should delight local BMX fans.

Mr. Simmons is also looking for sponsors for the free event.

"We've been able to hold this event with free admission because of the generosity of our sponsors. But we (also) set up a donation drop box and people are asked to donate to a selected charity."

Mr. Simmons will also host a meeting for those interested in extreme sports on October 18 at 1 p.m. at the playground.
