From a window table in the Silver Spoon Cafe on the corner of Victoria Street and Cedar Avenue, The Royal Gazette had a clear view of the corpse as the murder investigation got underway.

The dead man was lying at the junction of two walls with his head resting on his rucksack. His left leg was stretched out but the foot of his right leg was planted on the tarmac with his knee resting against the wall.

Inside the cafe customers speculated on what had caused the death.

One, Alan Lindo, said: "He was put that way to look like he was sleeping. You saw the way the body was. No one sleeps that way - it's impossible.

"It's just not comfortable. If you sleep, you lie down straight. I don't know what happened but there's no way that was a natural death."

Police found an uneaten KFC meal in a paper bag by the body -- then a more gruesome discovery was found.

Police pulled back the man's shirt and discovered what looked like a small puncture wound in the centre of his chest.

Customer Brent Munroe said: "It's a murder scene! He might have stabbed himself. He has a screw driver in his hand."

But his pal Mike Mello said: "I don't think it's a stabbing. There's no blood on his chest. That wound could have been from something else."

Police then moved the man's right arm which was still stiffly clutching a long black-handled screw driver before putting him into a body bag.

The victim's brother Noel Kelly later said he did not recall his brother having a wound on his chest.
