Fight Night promises to give a 'good bang for your buck'
A bumper card of experienced and novice boxing and the prospect of heavy girls battling it out ¿ Fight Night is going out with a bang in its last night at Number One shed tomorrow.
Up to 13 fights are expected with the top of the card given over to Bermuda's best amateurs against four boxers from Toronto.
Organiser Nir Sadeh said: "They are going to be good, giving our guys a good run for their money. I think any of these four could easily be the main event."
In the end Sadeh chose Jason Barker versus Lamark Ingram to top off the night.
"I have watched Lamark train ¿ he's a very dynamic boxer, very fit, very versatile and very quick. I think he will make for a good show. Jason Barker is a similar boxer.
"Just below them is Tom Healy, a Renegades rugby player, a scrum half. He's a quick and wily boxer. Thin but powerful. He can move. He's up against Stephen Baidacoff ¿ they are almost identical. That will be a good fight too. "
Fellow Renegades rugby player Chris Lemieux is taking on Tyler Yantha in a superheavy weights bout. Lemieux, also boxed in Toronto before moving here and last year triumphing in Fight Night.
Short and heavy, Lemieux is also surprisingly quick. "You wouldn't size him up for a boxer. That will be a really good fight."
MR Onions Sunday football team player manager Mark Dunlop has four victories to his name and just one loss and is also expected to put on a decent show against Brian Curry.
Fellow Onions player Richard Phinn is making his debut in the novice category ¿ if he can put on the required pounds and opponent Callon Burns lose a few pounds to put them in the same weight class.
"Richard is very fit, he's very keen and has been sparring with the coaches. They are very impressed and think he's got some potential. He says 'Give me a fight, I just want a fight'."
At 32 Phinn is quite a bit older than his opponent who Sadeh said is heavier and more experienced.
"The whole card is pretty solid."
It's also long. "We are quite excited about it. It gives good bang for the buck for spectators.
"From number six and up it is going to be good fighting ¿ well matched, well trained boxers. Lucien Marele is a waiter at the Hog Penny ¿ he's a pretty skilled guy, got some potential versus Jashun Thomas who fought last time and is pretty handy. At 165 they are small enough for an entertaining bout because they move around and they are nimble and yet they are quite strong guys. I think you will see a good clash there.
"Then there's Max Desrochers versus Chuck Morgan who is a very colourful individual with about 85 people supporting him ¿ there will be a whole section supporting him. Whether he wins or loses he's going to put on a show. I think it will be funny, one of those entertaining bout."
Another good potential match up is Devon Stowe versus Sinisha Erceg. Stowe, a fireman, had some experience about ten years ago and will be up against Erceg, a Mariners rugby player, from South Africa, who trained last year only for the fight to fall through. "This year he's ready. Those two will be a good clash."
Then there's the women's bout. Police Gym's Juliana d'estelle Roe, who lost her first fight in September at the Southampton Princess, is taking on Teacher rugby player Melissa DaPonte who won her first fight last year.
"They are well matched and it should be a good show. They have both been training quite hard, they are both keen to get in the ring. Girls fights are very rare and we are lucking to have one."
