Government abolished flat rate fees for cruise visits on Friday night to encourage more niche market ships to dock in Bermuda. Instead of all cruise lines being charged $60 per passenger no matter how long a ship visits, now ships will be charged $20 for every 24 hour period. Tourism and Transport Minister Ewart Brown said it would encourage more smaller, upmarket niche vessels to come and would also help boost weekend coverage. Dr. Brown also brought a bill allowing horse carriages to up half-hourly charges by $10 to $40. He said Bermuda was still cheaper than New York where it was $60 and comparable to Caribbean destinations. Rates were last increased five years ago.
