Bermuda may have been spared the flu virus ravaging other areas of the world as a result of being diligent about flu shots.

Any Bermudians who have not yet received the shot are advised by the Department of Health to do so ? particularly if they are travelling to the UK, where a rare Fujian strain of the virus is thought to have killed up to six children.

?As of today we have run out of the flu vaccine,? said senior medical officer Dr. Brenda Davidson yesterday.

But Health Department has ordered another 1,000 doses, she said, which will be arriving on the Island ?momentarily?.

Dr. Davidson said if a particularly serious cluster of cases does crop up in Bermuda, the Health Department would test to find out if it is the Fujian strain of the flu.

However, the tests cannot be done on the Island and would have to be sent overseas.

Dr. Davidson said testing would be for research purposes and raising the level of alert in Bermuda rather than effecting any new courses of action.

For now, she said, very few notifications of common flu have hit Bermuda.

The Department is receiving about eight notifications a week, she said.
