Frustration and anger with state of cable service

It has been more than six weeks since Hurricane Fabian caused homes Island-wide to lose cable television service. The Royal Gazette took to the streets of Hamilton to find out how many cable customers have been hooked back up.

Although he had to wait weeks for his cable to be restored, Progressive Labour Party spokesman Walter Roban found the silver lining without the extra channels.

"We faired better without cable - we read more, we talked more, we did more wholesome things as a family," Mr. Roban said.

Out of 23 of the people who spoke to The Royal Gazette, 19 have had the service restored, but not everyone was happy with the service.

"I got my cable back but I'm not happy with the service," Shawn Russell said. "The channels are scrambled and I have to flick through the channels and then go back to unscramble it, it's very irritating."

Norbert Simons, who has also been experiencing problems with his service said: "It came back on but most of the channels aren't working still and I've called CableVision."

Leslie Mendes received her service but she said: "The cable has been coming on in bits and pieces but I do think the credit we'll be getting in Warwick is fair."

But some customers were not as happy with the credit coverage the company had set for subscribers.

"I was starting to get bothered but I did get cable about a week ago but I won't be paying for the whole time it was out, I won't be paying for cable I didn't have," said Nick Soares.

Sarah Davies said she still doesn't have any service and said her credit coverage of eight days wasn't going to cover October.

"I don't see why I should have to pay for October," Ms Davies said.

Diane Alleyne also lives in Devonshire and she said: "I have no cable and I'm not paying anything until I get my cable back on."

One woman was on her way to the CableVision office when we spoke to her because she still had a cable in her yard.

"Our cable still isn't on because there is a cable in our yard. I'm on my way there now and I'm telling them if they don't come and pick it up I'm throwing it away," said Anne Hines.

Tanya Cheeseman said she was also going to call because she was still waiting for her service in St. George's.

And Gene-Anne Bean said she believed the whole parish of Smith's had no service although the cables looked like they were fixed.

"Last week Saturday they were around and it looks like the cables are fine but we still don't have cable. They've just been so slack," Ms Bean said.
