Police are hunting four men accused of a gang rape in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 24-year-old white local woman got into a dark car on Bermudiana Road opposite Splash nightclub before being driven off to a western parish where the assault occurred although Police are giving few clues about the case.

The suspects are all black, aged 18-25, and appear to be known to the Police who said DNA evidence could play a vital role in nabbing the perpetrators.

Asked why it had taken three days for Police to go public on the rape - called serious sexual assault in Bermuda - Superintendent Sinclair White told a Press conference yesterday: ?When the incident was first reported to us on Saturday morning there were very discrete, delicate and sensitive lines of inquiry we needed to develop.

?We wanted to strike while the iron was hot.?

Police are studying CCTV evidence from cameras in the neighbourhood which has restaurants, a bar and a nightclub and thus plenty of witnesses at that time of night.

Police are also appealing for a taxi driver who picked up the woman in the western parishes and took her home to come forward. ?Most importantly we are asking the four individuals to come forward.?

Supt. White would not say if the victim knew her attackers.

The victim was taken to hospital and is being counselled by the Police?s family liaison officer.

Supt. White said there was nothing suspicious about the woman getting into the car, which had stalled before driving off with her at around 3 a.m.

Ten detectives from CID and the serious crime unit are being led by Detective Inspector Tracey Adams on the case. No arrests have been made but information has been coming in said Supt. White.

Police avoided giving information on the length of the ordeal, the level of violence used and where it occurred.

Asked if the assault occurred in the car or a home or in the open Supt. White said: ?We are still working with the victim to establish the location.?

Nor would Police give details on what the woman had been doing up until she got in the car, what she was wearing, what the attackers were wearing and whether drink/drugs were involved.

Asked if the public should be worried that there were serial rapists on the loose Supt. White said circumstances indicated it was an isolated incident although he warned women to remain careful at night.
