George Bush, Sr. expected to hit Mid-Ocean links
Former US President George Bush, Sr. is due to arrive in Bermuda shortly for a brief golfing holiday, has learned.
The former President is understood to be arriving on the Island with CBS Sports announcer Jim Nance and two other golfing pros. The exact dates of their trip to the Island are unknown, but it is believed their stay will be very brief ? possibly just one night.
While US Consular Representative Jill Esposito declined to confirm or deny any reports yesterday, Deputy Governor Nick Carter confirmed that Government House has been made aware of President Bush?s impending visit as part of security measures being put in place ? however, he was unable to give the exact dates for the President?s visit.
Mid-Ocean Club president Michael Dunkley also declined to give the dates for the former President?s visit yesterday. Mr. Bush, Sr. has been a member of the Mid-Ocean Club for years, and is understood to have golfed in Bermuda several times before, including while he was President of the United States.
As a private club, the Mid-Ocean is ?honoured and privileged? to have guests such as the former President, Mr. Dunkley said yesterday. ?We have a lot of very influential members and we try to serve all our guests.?
As a former President, Mr. Bush, Sr. still has his own Secret Service security agents, and security for the trip is in their hands.
It is understood that agents have already vetted areas such as the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and Mr. Dunkley said yesterday that the Secret Service is also taking care of security during Mr. Bush, Sr.?s rounds of golf at the club.
?I don?t anticipate there will be any problems.?
