Citing uncertain economic realities, the United Bermuda Party has selected former Finance Minister Grant Gibbons as its new leader.

Party Chairman Wayne Furbert confirmed speculation that the United Bermuda Party had selected Dr. Gibbons (pictured) to replace Pamela Gordon whose resignation becomes effective today.

He would not say when the vote was taken or whether Dr. Gibbons had any serious challengers.

But The Royal Gazette understands that the race was contested by former UBP House Leader John Barritt who lost by a narrow majority.

And the leadership contest started, and ended, without rancour.

"The process went smoother than normal," said Mr. Furbert. The parliamentary group was informed of Ms Gordon's decision to retire today "way back in July", he added.

"So the process of thinking about what direction the party was going in and who the leader should be was well underway."

Dr. Gibbons had "secured the majority vote but has the unanimous support of his colleagues", Mr. Furbert told The Royal Gazette.

"He is a strong leader - someone we believe is needed at this time in Bermuda's history when there is so much uncertainty in the economy," continued Mr. Furbert.

"He has a wealth of experience in that area, especially, and he has demonstrated his leadership, his clear thinking and his openness.

"I know that one of the reasons Grant Gibbons has the support of his colleagues is that he recognises the need for change - in the United Bermuda Party and in Bermuda too."

Mr. Furbert added that Dr. Gibbons was able to get things done. "He is far more capable than most politicians of bridging the gap between lofty ideals and genuine accomplishment."

Dr. Gibbons has been a constant critic of the Progressive Labour Party Government's handling of the economy and public finances.

Trained as a chemist, Dr. Gibbons, 48, is the nephew of former Premier Sir David Gibbons and helps to run the family business Gibbons Company.

He entered Parliament in 1994 after winning a by election in the UBP stronghold of Paget East. Prior to that he was a Senator and Minister of Management and Technology and was charged with the redevelopment and handover of the US baselands. His last Cabinet portfolio was as Finance Minister which ended with the party's defeat in the 1998 General Elections.

Dr. Gibbons could not be reached for comment by Press time last night.
