The new Progressive Labour Party government is based on the "fraud and deceit" of Bermudian voters, United Bermuda Party leader Dr. Grant Gibbons said yesterday.

He said deputy leader Dr. Ewart Brown's admission that the party misled its own supporters about the deep rifts in the party to ensure it won the election was "a shocking and cynical manipulation of the voting public".

And he said the UBP would be "relentless" in holding Alex Scott's new administration to account for its actions.

He rounded on Dr. Brown for his admission to PLP supporters on Sunday night that the PLP had put on sham of unity so as to win the election.

Dr. Gibbons said yesterday: "The new United Bermuda Party believes the public should have serious questions about the integrity and moral authority of the new Progressive Labour Party government.

"During the election, the PLP asked for support on the basis that they were united behind Premier Smith's leadership and on the platform she delivered.

"Within two hours of the final election results, the PLP was split down the middle into two opposing camps and unable to form a government for three days.

"They have now cobbled together a band- aid government consisting of people whose serious differences are unlikely to disappear after swearing in.

"The interests of the people have been forgotten in a desperate effort to hang on to power.

"The new PLP deputy leader Dr. Brown said 'We misled you because we had to. We did everything in our power to pose as a united front so that we would do nothing to endanger winning the election'.

"This is shocking and cynical manipulation of the voting public. Forget trust. Forget honesty. Forget openness.

"This sorry chapter in Bermuda's political history means that the new Scott government is based on fraud and deceit. The people of Bermuda deserve much better.

"The need for new government in Bermuda has never been more obvious. The new United Bermuda Party will be relentless in holding the new Scott government accountable for their actions."
